Nantes (pronounced 'nont') is a neat little city two hours south west of Paris. Nantes is a perfect example of a humble French city and much less crowed than Paris. It comes complete with Castle, Cathedral, cobblestone streets, big and small rivers, tram system, lots of water fountains, those yummy French bakeries, lots of crazy people and being France it wouldn't be complete without the French dog poo.

This city is my home away from home for many reasons and I'm glad I can share a slice of it with you.

The Jazz & Belle Plaisance Festival from the 26 - 29 August. The river side is animated for the weekend with everything from Jazz, Blues and folk music with Creperie and oyster stands and as much free fun as you want to have. Its a great way to experience the true Nantes.

Rue du Marechal Joffre, one of my favourite places in the city. Just about every type of shop you can imagine is on this street. Two bakeries, three hair salons, six kebabs shops, music shop, beautician, six bars and four really good cafes.

On this fabulous street is Le Cyclope Theatre. Its an independent theatre that's in connection with one of the bars down the street. It features some truely unique pieces of original french theatre.

La Meche Rebelle. Best Hair dressing Salon on the street. Gibus Dingriville is the owner and master of hair. He speaks French/English and is very friendly. The hair salon is named after a popular graphic novel.

Frip in Shop. Also on Marechal Joffre. Great place to get cheap vintage finds, friendly service and a coffee or two.

Summer Stats

Bare arms -- yes, our summer has finally arrived, after we'd all pretty much given up on it. Over the weekend it was in the 90's in San Francisco, a rarity indeed. It has since cooled down a bit, but there's still no way I'm complaining. In general San Francisco's best weather is in the fall, but usually it would've arrived before now and the months leading up to it wouldn't have been quite so frigid, except maybe over at the beach and up by the wharf, where all the tourists go in their shorts and sandals to freeze. 

It's been a bad year for getting much use out of my sandals, which I'm beginning to realize were fairly foolish purchases. A quick scan of my "summer" outfits shows that I wore sandals only twice (one of those was with tights!), bare legs just 3 times, bare toes 3 times, and bare arms 11 times. On the other hand I sported tights or long socks 29 times, boots 28 times, a sweater or jacket 23 times, and even a pair of leather pants once. My summer stats make it seem like I live in Siberia.

I'm behind on uploading my most recent outfit photos, so I thought I'd point you to the recent feature that Mark's belts and harnesses got in Auxiliary Magazine and on their blog. The feature starts on page 45 of the online magazine and features Mark's work as well as a few other designers. I was especially pleased to see a couple of harnesses worn by a guy; it gives them a whole different look over a button-down shirt and on a man's frame.

1) Tell us about the tattoo(s) you are sharing with us - is there a background story or special meaning? Why did you choose this particular piece of art?


There is no meaning to this tattoo at all. I got it because it's something I always thought would look incredibly sexy. I flew to NY to get it done with my good friends who all get tattoos from Bert. The lines are so thick and heavy handed. It's straight up traditional. Bert's work really stands apart. It's so simple and clean. Aesthetically it's a really pleasing tattoo.


I was married for a year to a Swedish man. There's an amazing LA musician named Obi Best (http://www.myspace.com/obibest) who sings a song called, "Swedish Boy." It sums up everything accurately.

I got this tattoo shortly after my husband left me. We were supposed to be moving overseas together. He went back home to set things up for us and a week later he sent me a letter saying he didn't love me anymore and it was over.

Not to get all Lifetime, but it was very therapeutic for me. Bob assured me that the marriage ending wasn't the end of the world. He also offered to give me a shave that made me look 10 years younger. He had me laughing, smiling and feeling beautiful again despite things feeling really dark at the time.

3) Do you plan on getting more?

I plan on being completely covered, but I'm completely on a budget. I'd love to get more work done by Bert Krak as well as explore all the great tattoo artists here in Atlanta - I've got my eye on Jason Kelly's work at Memorial Tattoo, and Danielle at Only You Tattoo.

4) How do your family and friends feel about your tattoo(s)? Have you run into any adversity or negativity because of them?

Things are a lot differently now than they were almost 10 years ago. When I got my first tattoo I was actually kicked out of Bible College. The long and short - there was a strict no tattoo policy at the school. I knew this an opted to get one on spring break anyway. An older girl in the dorms saw it and ratted me out to the dean of students. It was a weird and very political situation. They had me write a 10 page disciplinary paper on why I chose to break the rule. I was a good kid! I just liked tattoos! I guess the paper wasn't convincing enough because they gave me the boot.

All the jobs I've ever had have been more than accepting of my tattoos, but I've also worked all jobs within entertainment / creative. Like I said, 10 years ago things were a little different. I think tattoos are pretty main stream now.

5) Any advice for those interested in getting tattooed but haven't gotten one yet?

Good tattoos are similar to investing in pieces of art. They cost money and it takes time to build a collection. Research tattoo artists as if you were buying a piece of fine art. Get to know their background and style. Travel to get tattooed if need be. Plan -- invest! Some of the best tattoos are old tattoos - from people who have spent years traveling the world and collecting!

Well, this weekend was a wonderful, busy one...and quite the important one, since we spent both days moving into our new home! So yes, we are officially here and officially home owners. What a happy, exciting time. I'm so thankful it all worked out, and just overjoyed with everything. It's still surreal. I had no time to blog all weekend, and besides we had no internet but I have to say how much I enjoyed just focusing on my family and our huge task at hand, rather than being online for any amount of time. Even though I am a obviously a huge of the whole internet world, I also really like taking breaks from it and I think its necessary in order to keep enjoying it. Besides, the "real world" is so much more fun! But anyway, my parents and sister came up for the weekend and helped us pack and move into our new place, get our old place cleaned and in order, and just overall were the biggest help in the entire world. I'm so thankful for them.




I am currently typing this from new family room and like I mentioned above it's truly surreal to be here, getting settled into our HOME! We've been busier than ever these past few days getting everything done, from our appliances getting delivered, furniture, utilities, you name it. Hank and my Dad also spent some time starting to put together some of Henry's baby furniture. It's crazy to go into his bedroom and just think about the fact that he is going to be here so soon, in that room, in that crib, using that changing table, having clothes in that closet. Madeline is also loving having all of this space and she runs from bedroom to bedroom exploring and re-exploring. It makes me happy to see her so happy!

Rock 'n Roll

I decided to do my outfit photo from out on our balcony for this one, since Mark had leather pieces spread out all over the floor in my usual spot. Note the pot of nasturtiums on the right; I'm growing those specifically to feed to our little flower-eating dinosaur.

I wore this outfit for a Girl's Night Out the week before last; Laura and I went to see The Cult over at the Warfield Theater. It was quite a flashback to my old high school rock n' roll days; I even caught a drumstick! This outfit was pretty toned down from what I would've worn back in the 80's, mainly because I value comfort a lot more now than I did in my teens.

What I found funny was that the keyboard player in the opening act (Aussie band The Black Ryder) had the exact hairstyle I had at age 16: long, shaggy, and shaved off on one side, like half a mohawk only bigger and with a lot more hairspray (although hers could've been slicked back rather than shaved; it was hard to tell). It was a kick to see that style again; it was actually quite an imaginative haircut for the time, though I consider it one of the worst I've ever sported. It was after that phase that I moved on from rock 'n roll to punk, and wisely chopped off the rest of that long hair, which was never very flattering on me.

Stars and Stripes

I found this little tunic at Goodwill just before we left for Burning Man. Out on the playa I wore it as a super-short minidress, with just a bikini bottom underneath. Back in the real world though, it's relegated to the role of tunic, and will be worn strictly over skirts or pants. The starry scarf came with the tunic and is actually designed to be used as a belt, but for this outfit I wanted the contrast of a black belt, so I swapped in one of Mark's designs and wore the original belt as a scarf.

One thing I noticed about this tunic is that while it's really comfortable for normal wearing, the sleeves are a little too tight for the hunched-over position required for riding a mountain bike. Which reminds me that I really hate riding mountain bikes. So if this tunic goes back to the playa again, it'll either be with cut-off sleeves or, preferably, I'll be riding a cruiser bike instead.

Burning Man bikes are a whole phenomenon in and of themselves. First of all, the alkaline playa dust is highly corrosive, which means you really don't want to take a nice expensive bike out there. And then, with the thousands of bikes scattered all over the playa, it's important to be able to readily identify yours, as well as light it up thoroughly for nighttime visibility. So what you'll see out there is an amazing assortment of lavishly decorated, incredibly beat up and rusty bikes, many wrapped with EL-wire, which can be used to create all sorts of spectacular effects against the black background of the desert. Every year as August approaches, beater bikes become a hot commodity in and around San Francisco, which is good to know if you're looking to unload an old rusty bike.
